Client :: Red River Waterway Commission
Industry :: Tourism, Industry, Economic Development
Challenge :: The site for the Red River Waterway Commission targeted a wide audience range. This online presence had to speak to people interested in fishing, boating, camping/recreation areas, the commissioners, ports and economic development, locks/dams as well as education about the Red River, the Red River Valley and its citizens and wildlife.
Solution :: By developing an extensive sitemap, KJA divided the site into areas of interest that could be easily navigated using the persistent navbar located at the top of the site. After examining web traffic of the RRWC’s previous site, it was determined that Maps and Directions, Materials Requests and Latest News were most frequented. These topics were pulled forward and made readily available on the homepage. Also, a custom module was created which gathered information from the Corps of Engineers data service and generated a graphical representation of the river stages at key locations. Interactive flash maps were drawn and programmed allowing users to view and navigate to more information about the recreation areas, ports and locks and dams. Online lesson plans were written for teachers to download and present to their students. These lessons allow them to educate the next generation about the importance of the Red River relative to our local lifestyle and economy. An Online Office was developed for the Commission to post members, agendas and minutes for meetings. The “Life on the Red” section was developed to house interactive games for kids and adults alike. Here, they could learn about the history of the area, through an interactive timeline, and view the fish, wildlife and abundant plant life along the River.
